Best kept secret
One of our best kept secrets, the Bureau of Infrastructure Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) is a terrific resource of information on regional Australia.
BITRE provides economic analysis, research and statistics on infrastructure, transport, regional development and local government issues to inform both Australian Government policy development and wider community understanding. BITRE holds unique aviation, maritime and rail transport data collections which are made available in a number of publications series - most of which are free on their website.
BITRE's research program includes the following areas of work: the long term outlook for the transport task; infrastructure delivery performance; rail, road and air transport reform; urban transport ; transport environmental, safety and security impacts; climate change and transport; and regional economic development - patterns, causes and effects.
BITRE also includes the department's Climate Change Taskforce which leads portfolio engagement with the Government's climate change policy agenda. BITRE also manages Australia's engagement with the International Transport Forum, part of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development family of organisations.
